Fishing Method: Tip Run Eging – Easy Way to Catch Squids

Are you going out for squidding sometimes? Do you do Eging then?

It’s a beginning of the winter in here at Australia, and this season is the main season of squidding.

For Eging method main target is bigfin reef squid – called “Australian Caramari” in here, but this species are usually in deep water based, so sometimes it can happen there seems no squids around your point. It can be like there are some but not fascinated, but if the water condition is not that good then squids might decide to stay in deep seas and not coming to shore.

But this method, Eging from the boat, is one of the strong method for squid in many situations.

That method is called “Tip Run Eging”.

How To Tip Run Eging

Tip Run Eging – sometimes called just Tip Run – is the Eging method on the boat, and can reach to the deeper area than Eging from shore, so the Egi for Tip Run is usually heavier than the normal one.

Here are the steps of how to:

1. Drop the Egi to the bottom. If the boat is not flowed you will need to cast the Egi but usually you just need to drop it down to the bottom. You will need to drop to the OPPOSITE WAY of flowing direction. For example if your boat flows from right to left you will drop the Egin on the right hand side.
2. Touch the bottom as fast as you can. To feel touching the bottom is one of the important factor of this method. Support to free your line by hand and/or by moving your rod up and down to speed up.
3. As soon as you feel the bottom then retrieve to get rid of loose line and start jerking 5 – 10 times. Not too big, but like jiging.
4. Stop your rod at around your hip height level or a little under, and keep for 5 – 10sec. Keep the angle of your rod and line 90 degrees to get the bite sign clearer. As your boat flows the Egi also swims horizontally, and this moment is the most important moment that squid may attack.
5. If you don’t get any signs then repeat 1 – 4 again. It is case by case however if you are not sure about the condition, it will be better to put it up completely from water in 2- 3 times, then start dropping from first position.

Reels

As you will need to use very thin lines like 6lb – 10lb dragging is one of the important point to select the reel. Like normal Eging SHIMANO 2500-3000 size, or DAIWA 2000-2500 size can be suit.

Line

To feel your Egi touching bottom you will usually need to select lines as thin as possible. Somebody says 4lb around(0.4 size in Japanese size Gou), but it can be too thin sometimes especially when the bottom can be rock hard and very rough, so I normally use 6lb (size 0.6) – 8lb (size 0.8) braid lines depending on the case and expected squid size. The thinner the easier to feel the bottom, but if you hook the big squid like over than 2kg, 6lb can be too weak to pull them up.

Egi

Normal Egi are too light as you go deeper on this method. Highly recommended to use the Tip Run Egi.
