Exsence series – it’s a “seabass” game fishing model only to pursue how to manage lures in tough condition of the salt water.
Now the top of the EXSENCE series are totally renewed and it’s revealed – with tough metal “black” body.
This may be your first item of the mid-size game fishing such as Seabass, Trevally, Tailor, mid size Kingies.
Quick Response Series, Lighter and Smoother
This new SHIMANO EXSENCE ’17 has the same body of Stella ’14 – Magnesium body, which is light but strong, as everyone know about Stella.
This feature achieves lighter and stronger, which is very similar to Vanquish ’16 we introduced already… The common size of both reel is only 3000MHG and Vanquish ’16 3000MHG is 210g, and this EXSENCE ’17 3000MHG is 215g! Surely we can say it’s nearly the same as the lightest reel of the Shimano lineups.
And his SHIMANO EXSENCE ’17 reel also has New Magnum Light Rotor, the asymmetry Ci4+ rotor which produces smoothness and “quick response” of the reeling, which you can start fighting as soon as hooking.
High Performance Water Resistant X-Protect
This spinning reel also has the same water resistant system as TwinPower XD ’17, X Protect, which has water repellent features and labyrinth water resistant system so that you can bring and use this for tougher spots such as rock fishing.
This is totally new water resistant system revealed in this 2017.
You Have More Choice of Fighting – Rapid Fire Drag
I pretty remember especially when I fought with Giant Trevally one day, the size of school were varied and therefore their powers were so different. And as they have wider body, when they face towards you it can be dragged easily but when they run against you – that was a disaster.
I was just using SHIMANO Exsence BB and drag were too weak or too strong in many times, even only at one fight.
That’s why this new SHIMANO EXSENCE ’17 has the “Rapid Fire Drag” on it. That’s the large drag wheel and you can change the drag power drastically by moving tiny little. And don’t worry, Rigid Support Drag system will give you smooth line-out on the fight.
Spec and Release Date
As well as Twin Power XD this spinning reel only have medium size numbers – 3000 or 4000 with medium depth spool, which only targets the mid-size game fishing as written already. I’m sure you’ll love this!
And the release date is announced as March 2017.

This looks like a special reel..Iam certainly interested in buying one..Question..is the magnesium a better strength option than the C14+ material ..and what is the weight difference between the C3000 compact and the 3000mhg..my query is this…is the wight of 15 grammes mean that the 3000 body is a better strength option than the c3000? it is quite a difference and would possibly effect my decision of purchase ?..Is the gearing more heavy duty?..I will be catching some big fish!
Hello Drue,
Thank you for your comment. My answer for your questions are, for comparing to magnesium and Ci4, according to SHIMANO staff Ci4 is actually stronger and lighter than other materials such as magnesium or alminium and it is of course more expensive option.
And the difference in between C3000M and 3000MHG, the weight is differed because C3000 models actually has smaller body than 3000 models. You can imagine C3000 actually has 2500 sized body with 3000 spool. The systems are totally the same, so they can use from rock wall hardly as it has X-Protect system, so not really different from heavy duty pont of view. Compact body’s merit is that it is lighter therefore less tiring, but the used gear is a bit smaller so usually less power, so yes as you expected 3000 can be better strengh option if you don’t really mind about weight difference.
Hope this answers good enough for you and it will help you catching your dream fish!
Hello, I just own the Shimano exsence Ci4 4000 XGS and I use it for seabass fishing in Italy (european seabass).
I am very attracted by the new exsence and I wat to change my exsence Ci4 with the new exsence 2017 4000 MXG.
Is it a good choice?
Hi Nicolas, yes indeed, as you see the spec is very similar but the new Exsence has more bearings and lots of newer features such as new magnum light rotor, micro module gear, etc so I believe it’ll be smoother. One thing MXG is a bit bigger than XGS so the line capacity is gained. If you think that’s no problem, then that could be a good choice to me.
I’m looking at this reel to purchase for tough fighting Australian salt water species like mangrove jack, trevs and snapper. Now My question, is the magnesium material in this reel really salt water proof? If the coating get scratched or chipped what is going to happen? Is it the same material as the 14 Stella?
Hi. Basically, yes it is, as this is designed especially for salt water seabass fishing, and this is officially told it is for saltwater use.
And I also talked to Shimano staff and told the basic technology are the same in between Stella14 and this, however newer models are better than older, as the technology is advanced time by time.
When it’s scratched or chipped it could be rusted from there, but this risk is pretty same to other reels, as told.
I have a Shimano sustain and I was looking for two more reels at 3000 Series and a 2500 or another 4000 which I have already my question is what’s so different between this sustain and this particular real and how does it really stack up with the Stella I know the Stella is the top Shimano spinning reel for saltwater and freshwater and I will be doing both Darcy this particular real what’s the big difference between it and the sustain that I have now
Hi Jason, thanks for your question.
Comparing this to the Sustain, this Exsence has some features that Sustain does not – Micromodule Gear which has small teeth to make feeling smoother and quieter, and Rapid Fire Drag which is the drag to change power quicker when you adjust the drag even a little.
Moreover, Exsence has more bearings that makes feeling smoother as well. And weight is lighter than Sustain, that tires you less.
If you compare with Stella of course Stella is lighter and smoother than Exsence, and actually tougher than Exsence as well.
New Stella is, because of those differences, you can actually feel any feedback from the reel sensitively, so that you can collect lots of information under the water. Smoothness helps it a lot.
Hope it will help. Thanks.
