It became a regular event from SHIMANO – 2022 Autumn / Winter SHIMANO Fishing Show was revealed.
There are again lots of interesting and exciting products announced in this time as well.
And this could be one of the biggest news from SHIMANO, especially for reel fleek.. SHIMANO 22 Miravel.
The light weight but affordable like Nasci and Ultegra, let’s dig in to the fascinating spinning reel.
MGL Series (old name: Quick Response Series) Reel
This can really be the first reel of this price range for SHIMANO’s MGL series reel, which was used to be called as Quick Response Series.
In the past, Ultegra used to have Magnum Light Rotor but now it’s categorised as Core Solid Series.
The biggest point is all body / rotor are made by Ci4+ carbon material, originated by SHIMANO, which is ultra light but has good enough strength.
This is mainly used for middle – high end class reels that can keep both light weight and strength, but now this under-$200 reel also has full Ci4+ body!
When SHIMANO says “Body”, that actually means the half of body parts with reel foot, and the other side part is called “Body cover”, so we initially assumed the body is Ci4+ and the cover could be a plastic.
However, Australian website actually mentioned the “Side plate is also made by Ci4+”.
How incredible it is, isn’t it!?
Magnum Light Rotor… ?
Magnum Light Rotor is one of the main feature of MGL Series such as Vanquish, Vanford and TwinPower XD, which has an original shapes with light weight Ci4+ carbon material, that is really light and but good enough strength, and pretty low inertia of spinning.
That would be really great if this new 22 Miravel does have this rotor…
Actually, SHIMANO Japan official site says “Magnum Light Rotor” on the spec list but SHIMANO AUS does not.
Then what’s the right information!? …. So, I actually went to AFTA Fishing Show 2022 in Australia, and touched the reel!
And the correct answer is… “NO”.
As SHIMANO AUS staff described, this Miravel is especially made for the low-budget users, as already described.
And therefore this reel’s design is actually, based on 21 Nasci, which is also the low-budget but Core Solid Series reel.
That means, the body and the rotor designs are exactly the same as 21 Nasci, but instead of using plastic or metal, Ci4+ carbon is used for them.
So, it actually means it is not the true Magnum Light Rotor, but really in between the normal rotor and MGL.
So, is that a negative point?
Well actually, we don’t think so.
Why? Because, MGL rotor really is light weight and low inertia, but because of this, I could feel it’s not strong enough.
Remember when we published 21 TwinPower XD review, the staff has caught plenty of big mackerels after that.
Basically OK of course the body was really strong and torqueful, but we felt the rotor was not “that” strong.
Does not mean that’s weak, we could use that for over meter Spanish Mackerels as well with no problem.
Buf if that was middle – large size kingfish, amberjack or even over 10kg mulloway?
We would think that’s not the reel for those.
But this Nasci-based rotor, is not that light but not that weak.
I think it has a little more power but I could feel the lightness when I tried cranking.
And of course, that’s only the first touch without any lines, lures nor even fish but this reel was really incredible.
Inside The Body Structure
Do you know much about SHIMANO’s spinning reel structure?
From 21 Ultegra and above has SHIMANO’s original structure, Cross Gear structure that uses more gears to tell the cranking power to the rotor.
But this 22 Miravel is, as based on 21 Nasci, this uses S Cam structure, that the S Cam directly attaches to the drive gear and the drive gear directly moves the main shaft through to the spool.
This way it’s not as smooth as Cross Gear system however the parts are less and can be simplified which could cut off the cost and weight.
Silent Drive is also featured
As well as 21 Nasci and above, this 22 Miravel also has Silent Drive, which could reduce the cranking noise and makes ranking smooth.
Spec and Release Date
The new 22 Miravel has size variety from #1000 – #C5000 like Nasci and Ultegra, with variety of gear ratio which can be used versatile.
Releasing date is set to be Oct 2022.
