In the last November 2019, I was back to Japan for research and had a chance to try this new boat seabass rod from Valleyhill – Tideraker Outboater Bay Custom, which I was so keen to have a go.
Here for you what I felt from this incredible seabass rod, which has multiple ways of use, and possibilities.
First Impression – Light and Soft Tip
This Valleyhill boat seabass rod, Tideraker Outboater Bay Custom, is one of my most keen-to-use product released at this year, 2019 since I saw a news of this rod.
As development team says, this rod is specially designed for offshore seabass game fishing, which is usually for light lure casting game, but has potentials for other type of fishing too.
I was lucky to have a chance to meet up with Valleyhill staffs in Japan again, then they showed the rods and let me tried them.
My first impression when I touched those rods, those are so light, than how I imagined from actual weight at the spec sheet.
Short model TRBS-73ML weighs 145g and TRBS-79M weighs 155g, which are not that light comparing to other rods however, I didn’t really feel much different.
Then when I flipped the tip several times to check the feeling it was really soft and bounced smoothly that impressed me this sensitivity.
But when I told them this, they showed how the rod bends to me and surprised me how tough it was. The butt is thin but strong, so is the tip.
Felt light, thin and sensitive soft tip, that was my first impression.
Second Impression in Use – Easy to Cast + High Sensitivity
We then went out for bay area for testing this Tideraker rod.
Attached reel was DAIWA Morethan 17, weighs around 250g and the lure I tried first was Ja-do Rezan the metal minnow 20g.
Total weight was around 420g, but still felt much lighter than actual weight. Maybe the shape and position of grip and reel sheet, I thought the tackle balance was so nice and stable.
When I cast 10 – 20 times I was again surprised how I felt – 20g metal jig is not that light lure weight in seabass lures, and of course the rod bends well when casting, but also has well elasticity to cast further.
The model I tried was TRBS-79M and development team told me this was designed for well casting with longer distance, and I really felt it.
Then changed to around 10-15g lures but casting was still very smooth and well distanced.
The minnow jig Ja-do Rezan swims like a minnow lure, with tale-flipping action but it could be very hard for you to feel how it acts in the water, if you use cheap thick rods. But with this Tideraker, I could feel the waving motion really well.
With this sensitive tip you can find out the right speed that lures can swim well.
At this fishing trial we have not much bites as the condition was not so well, however I could really feel where bait fish were hanging around from this rod.
As of this sensitivity, I thought I would recommend you to use high performance reels with this rod, such as DAIWA Exist / Certate / Morethan / Ballistick, SHIMANO Stella / Vanquish / Exsence / Twin Power – at least more than 20,000 yen otherwise reel would absorb its sensitivity.
Third Impression – High Capacity of Use
After an hour or so, I then tried some different ways of use because I thought this rod can really use for multiple targets.
One pitch jerk like jigging – speed / slow, wide winding like eging, high speed skipping, twitching and shaking.. and all of those could be achieved with no stress.
79M is a bit tougher and stronger model so it could be a bit overpower for light game fishing with less than 5g lures, or to eging, but at least it can be used for any of lure fishing with lure weight in between 7 – 30g and for light weight jigging as well.
And by 73ML, this can be used for small – mid size target lure fishing and for eging as well.
Bait fishing, no problem, just be considered the sinker weight, you shouldn’t use more than 1oz sinker.
In Australia lots of anglers go out with their boats to canals, rivers, lakes, broadwater or to offshore to target Trevally, Bluefish (aka. Tailor in AUS), Flathead, Mangrove Jack, Australian Bass, Murray Cod, Barramundi, Perches, etc… And this Tideraker seabass rod, is one of a best match I thought.
One of the staff even showed me when he caught 10kg Japanese Amberjack by 79M! That is amazing isn’t it, you could even dream that fish with such a light thin seabass rods.
And even you can use it for shore fishing, especially canals, rivers or under the bridge where you don’t have to have very long cast distance but need more accuracy.
Conclusion
This Tideraker Outboater Bay Custom is again designed for offshore boat seabass fishing and this is really good fishing rod for offshore game fishing I can say.
Cast distance, accuracy is well achievable, sensitivity is so high, but strong blanks that can possibly bring up 10kg amberjack from the bottom.
I can say this rod is a versatile rods for sure.
