It is one of the most exciting time of the year for lots of anglers, that major fishing show season and lots of new products announce are going on.
And this is one of them – DAIWA 23 SALTIGA is released!
And this is literally an interesting news.
Basically, this is additional size of 20 SALTIGA, but not only that.
Let’s have a look at it together 🙂
Tough but Light, AIRDRIVE Design is Featured
The additional size is #4000 – #6000, pretty similar size and line capactiy of SHIMANO’s sizes, which is for middle size saltwater spinning reels.
That size is of course, used for middle size fishing but not as light as light spinning reel, so it really is in between.
And this new 23 SALTIGA is really in between – AIRDRIVE Designed Saltwater spinning reel.
Base body is the same aluminium monocoque body with large strong and rigid tough Digigear and Magsealed ball bearigns, but the main shaft is held by ball bearings – called AIRDRIVE Shaft, so that the shaft spins really smoothly than previous model, which can make spinning lighter, smoother and even stronger.
This is like DAIWA-Style Infinity Drive from SHIMANO.
Air Bail has now been added to AIRDRIVE Bail, which is smaller diameter but strong enough. #4000 – 5000 and #6000 have different diameter bail wire as well.
The biggest thing could be this – aluminium AIRDRIVE Rotor, which is lighter and lower inertia rotor shape, but with strong aluminium.
When we reviewed 22 EXIST at our Youtube Channel, AIRDRIVE Rotoer is made by ZAION carbon material. It is super light and sensitive, however is slightly softer and easier to bend than previous Air Rotor.
But this is now made by aluminium metal – so lighter, smoother but strong enough, even against 10kg+ cods I would imagine.
Those features are really in between 22 EXIST and 20 SALTIGA, so this 23 SALTIGA is really new reel – mid size saltwater reel.
Other Features
As of the name “SALTIGA”, of course those other features are installed.
Magsealed BallBearing / Magsealed
This has been out for quite long while and one of main water-resistance feature from DAIWA, Magsealed / Magsealed Ball Bearings.
Magnetic oil is inserted into certain parts and that becomes “boundaries” from water leaking inside.
This is actually blaking the spinning a little, and this is one of the reasons why DAIWA’s spinning reel is not really free spins like SHIMANO’s, but stops quickly as soon as you release the handle.
ATD
23 SALTIGA’s drag washers are made by carbon materials, which is stronger and lasting longer than fabric. And ATD special oil makes “Automatically-adjusted” drag feel.
This drag is easier to release lines, especially when the line gets stronger impacts such as when fish bite, shake heads, etc than SHIMANO’s drags.
LC-ABS
This is similar to AR-C spool edge from SHIMANO, which the spool edge has diagonal shape so that the line can go out and be released freely, which can make cast distance further more.
“Strong”, “Tough” but “Light” – those keywords are for all reels’ dream eternity, and this 23 SALTIGA is one of DAIWA’s answer to this theme.
Spec and Release Date
23 SALTIGA is basically for some additional body size to 20 SALTIGA – #4000, #5000 and #6000, medium saltwater reels with 2 gear ratios – High 5.7 and eXtra High 6.2.
