17 EXSENCE is a spinning reel model from SHIMANO designed especially for seabass lure fishing. Everything is thought for seabass fishing and therefore it only has #3000 and #4000 size but expensive.
This EXSENCE BB is out at 2014, thought about the same theme – seabass lure fishing but cheaper price. Not as expensive as EXSENCE but light and sensitive, usable reel for years.
And for this Fishing Festival 2020 SHIMANO has renewed this 20 EXSENCE BB with lots of additional features.
Quick response to Coresolid
As 17 EXSENCE is a line-up of quick response series, previous 14 EXSENCE BB was in the same line with Ci4+ Magnum Light Rotor because the light reeling and sensitivity to gather information from your lure is essential for seabass fishing.
But this 20 EXSENCE BB shifted to Coresolid series, so it does not have Magnum Light Rotor anymore.
Instead, it got more features for toughness.
Changes from the previous model
Instead of Magnum Light Rotor, new 20 EXSENCE now has Hagane Gear and X-Protect for line-roller and roller clutch, so it’s tougher than previous model.
But interestingly, weight is lighter than previous model. I assume this is because of SHIMANO’s innovation in these 6 years, and feedback from 18 STELLA development, materials are now tougher but tougher than 6 years back.
And therefore they decided to have it on Coresolid, because they can produce at least the same sensitivity without Magnum Light Rotor now.
I have been using those SHIMANO reels, including the previous model 14 EXSENCE BB and it is really nice reel comparing to its price, however the newer Coresolid model 17 Ultegra is in the similar price range but I felt its sensitivity was close to 14 EXSENCE BB.
From this experience, I would assume SHIMANO is confident 20 EXSENCE at least has the same sensitivity, or even more, even though it is changed to Coresolid series.
Only one change I did not like is the handle.
14 EXSENCE BB has small EVA round handle, but this new 20 EXSENCE has T-shape handle.
SHIMANO makes all those latest models on seabass class body – #2500 – #4000 have this t-shape handle but I didn’t like it. It’s not very good for holding but as handle is big, sensitivity is less than other handle type.
Coloring has also changed to black style like 17 EXSENCE, against 14 EXSENCE has mix of black and silver.
Spec and release date
Line-up is very limited, only has #C3000 / #3000 / #4000 with HG = speed gear or XG = extra speed gear ratio.
Release date is this March, 2020.
