“EXSENCE” is a fishing tackle brand from SHIMANO, targetting medium lure game fishing especially for Seabass.
This year, SHIMANO has informed that the affordable Exsence spinning reel is being renewed – 24 EXSENCE BB!
Let’s check out how it will be updated together.
Ci4+ Carbon Material Body
As this model is an affordable, entrance model of EXSENCE brand, the previous 20 EXSENCE BB body was made by composite resin material, which is used for lower and cheaper products, but 24 EXSENCE is not… The body material is now made by Ci4+ SHIMANO’s carbon material, which reduced 15g of weight at 4000MXG.
Seabass rods these days are pretty right like just under 200g or even around 200g, therefore this update can be well-welcomed one from users.
Not exactly sure but from their introduction, it looks like only the big body part with reel foot is made by Ci4+, but the body cover and rotor are not mentioned.
Additionally, not mentioned but the spool looks like 19 Vanquish like below… don’t you think?
Micromodule Gear II
Very famous, but core technology of SHIMANO reels, 2nd age Micromodule Gear II is featured.
Cold forged HAGANE X Micromodule Gear II makes silky, extra smooth reeling but durable as other previous models have prooved.
This gear feature also gives you extra sensitivity to catch more information from under the water, therefore this is a good upgrade from the previous model.
Silent Drive
SHIMANO’s original feature – Silent Drive is also featured to 24 EXSENCE BB.
This feature is for inner structure redesigning, adjusting clearance of each parts as much as possible that can reduce the reeling noise much, so Silent Drive reels can be much quieter, smoother and more sensitive than non Silent Drive ones in my experience.
Rapid Fire Drag
Rapid Fire Drag is to change drag power by just small twisting of drag knob, so that you can change the drag power while fighting pretty quick.
This is to control fish easier while fighting, but this is likely to be a matter of personal preference.
If you like to change drag power quicker, this can be the good feature for you, but one little thing, if you wish to change drag power slightly, small amount, this EXSENCE series can make it harder.
24 EXSENCE BB vs 23 EXSENCE XR
23 EXSENCE XR is a middle range spinning reel of EXSENCE brand, whi was the renewal model of previous EXSENCE Ci4+.
This is a pure MGL (old: Quick Resonse) series that is based on the theme – light and quick reel, topped by Vanquish, therefore EXSENCE XR has MGL – Magnum Light Rotor made by Ci4+, of course body is the same as well, so the weight is much lighter – 225g for 4000MXG against 24 EXSENCE BB’s 265g.
Ridid Support Drag – which holds the main gear in the spool by ball bearing that makes drag spin much smoother – has also been featured.
Of course, XR is better than BB. But price is doubled..
To me, if you are core angler and go fishing quite often, XR will pay out, but otherwise, new BB would be good enough.
24 EXSENCE BB vs 22 Miravel
Not sure if somebody wished to know about this… but just in case!
These are interesting comparison to be honest, as those body are the same Ci4+, but rotor is different – 22 Miravel has Ci4+ rotor, against 24 EXSENCE BB – possible plastic (as SHIMANO did not mention about rotor material, we suspect that they would say out if rotor is also made by Ci4+).
And therefore, Miravel is a little lighter than new EXSENCE BB – #4000 of Miravel is 245g.
However features and inner structure are different, EXSENCE BB has cross-gear oscillating, against Miravel’s cam oscillating.
Normally, cross-gear is much smoother and quietter than cam’s in SHIMANO’s spinning reel range.
Moreover, X-Protect, Micromodule Gear II, Long Stroke Spool, and One-Piece Bail are featured to BB, therefore feature-wise, EXSENCE BB looks much better.
Last, the spooling line capacity is also different.
General spinning reels like Miravel has normal 3000 size with PE#1.5 – 270m and 4000 size spool with PE1.5-320m capacity, but EXSENCE BB only has medium-shallow spools such as 3000 / PE1.5-120m and 4000 / PE1.5-200m.
We are expecting that totally 24 EXSENCE BB would have better feeling than 22 Miravel, but around \5,000 up from 22 Miravel.
This is only from specs, therefore we are not sure until we get the reel and compare, but at this stage, we think 24 EXSENCE BB can be better totally if you are ok with the price and the line capacity.

Spec and Release Date
As of above, this is a special line-up spinning reel which only has C3000, 3000 and 4000 with medium shallow spools, because that kind of line capacity is good enough for seabass fishing.
Release date is again… not set just yet..
But you will be able to see and touch this reel at Fishing Festival Yokohama 2024, which is starting this coming Friday, so if you are in Japan and have time to visit, that would be great to try these new products.
