As you know, there are always plenty of species under water. There might be just a small bait fish around, when you do lureing or jigging. Or there might be some big fish eaters like Trevally, Jew Fish, Mulloway, Tailor, etc. when you do Sabiki.
At the Gold Coast, there is a big fishing place called “The Spit” Sandpipe Jetty, which goes over the ocean, but you can only use 2 rods per person on the jetty, despite you can aim live fish like slimmy or yakka, or Trevally or King fish at the same time. You might be frustrated from the rod limit, although you might want 3 or 4 rods with different tackles, like jigging, bait medium fishing, live bait sabiki and live bait fishing.
Now, we introduce the new method Jig Sabiki, which you can aim both live bait or small fish and medium fish eaters like trevally.
The Hybrid Fishing Method of Sabiki with Jig
Have you heard about Sabiki? That’s one of the major method to catch especially live baits, that has 4-6 hooks on one line, with down-shot sinker.
Now, you just simply need to change the down shot sinkers to micro – mid jig, then that’s it!
You can aim small fish by Sabiki, and mid fish in the same time by Jig.
You can even use your mid strength rods with 2500 – 4000 type reels (SHIMANO size), depending on what type of fish you target / you can expect at your fishing point.
How to Jig Sabiki
The basic method is very simple – the action is in between the jig and sabiki method. As follow:
- Cast or drop your rig down to the bottom
- Wind up by one pitch jerk, basically not big like slow jigging.
- After 5 times jerking, drop to the bottom again
- Repeat 1 – 3
That’s it. Sometimes high-speed jerking can be effective, sometimes just normal retrieving can be the one. Or move up and down slowly… Just seek the effective pattern of the day, at the point.
The aim you make action to, is so that the jig looks like a fish trying to eat small bait – sabiki. It is thought as jig looks like a fish trying to eat something, could mean those “something” (sabiki) is such a nice bait!
Recommended Tackle balance
As above, the tackle balance can depends on what type of fish you can aim or can expect at where you fish. Some of my basic tackles are as below:
Place : The Spit Jetty at Main Beach, Gold Coast
Target: Slimy / Yakka (yellow tail mackerel) – around 20cm, Trevally / Tailor – around 35cm
Rod: 4-6kg / 5-8kg line capacity 8-10 ft rods
Reel & Line: SHIMANO Exsence BB C3000HGM with YGK G-Soul Upgrade PE X8 1.2/25lb /
SHIMANO Stradic 2500HGS with YGK G-Soul Upgrade PE X8 0.8/16lb

Jig: Maria (Yamaria) Shore Tricker 25g Pink Sardine / SHIMANO Colt Sniper 21g Blue Pink Conbi
This is just an example of the balance, should not be perfect.
I usually use high / speed geared reels, so you can make fast move and slow move as you need by chaning jerking pitch, like one pitch or half pitch, and therefore you can also use them for lure fishing, Jigging, Snapper game, and Eging as well.
For the sabiki, I use night-glow skin type because the main time of the sabiki can be at the night time, around lights. This works very well, you can catch 20 yakkas within 2 hours, sometimes, without any baits. Keimura skin can be effective in the sunrise/sunset time.
For Jig, because you will also need to use Sabiki, I usually select slow jigs like above, so mainly I aim to get bites in the fall action.
This is really “Kill two birds with one stone” method, and easy for beginner as well.
