Affordable Heavy Duty Reel is Renewed – SHIMANO 24 Stradic SW is Announced

This is actually unexpected announce from SHIMANO Japan – one of affordable middle range heavy duty “SW” spinning reel – renewed SHIMANO Stradic SW is coming soon!

Let’s take a look at the new 24 Stradic SW, how the SaltWater heavy duty spinning reel will be updated.

#5000 and Bigger – Now Based on Stradic SW 14000XG

Ok, let’s be honest.

Feature-wise, actually the size from #5000, there are not really different from the catalogue.
The only difference is this – X-Tough Drag, which is featured in the newer Stradic SW 14000XG, that sandwitches the spool from up and bottom, therefore the drag power is enhanced from previous one-side drag system.

This also enhances the drag durability and anti-heating ability, which is quite effective against “blue-runners” such as tuna, mackerel type of species.
Of course, the drag washers are made by carbon.

Other than that, the features are quite same – X-Shield, X-Protect, and Infinity Drive.
Of course they should not exactly be the same, parts are brushed up and should be more balanced, and some little enhancement should be produced… But to be honest, it doesn’t drastically updated like 20 Stradic SW.

Therefore, if you think to upgrade from 20 Stradic SW.. Probably not, they look quite similar, unless you really need the better and more durable drag system.

Personally, this update is fascinationg though, so that we can use this reel for longtail tuna, mackerel tuna, spanish mackerel, etcas drag system is the main key to fight against those species, but you don’t need to have such big reels, so 24 Stradic SW #5000 / #6000 will be great choice.

#4000 – This is Based on 23 Stradic 4000/C5000

As well as 20 Stradic SW 4000 – which was based on 19 Stradic 4000 – this new 24 Stradic 4000 is the same, based on 23 Stradic 4000/C5000 (they have the same body).

The most of the structures are the same, at least those schematics are quite similar.

Therefore comparing to the previous 20 Stradic SW 4000 – this size is drastically updated, with those following features:

  • Infinity Xross – gear teeth are widened and touched widely so that it enhances gear durability. Personally I feel this is also enhancing the reel power and smoothness.
  • Infinity Drive – much less fliction of main shaft and pinion gear makes the reeling even stronger and smoother.
  • Anti-TwistFin – the fin-type guide part will lead the line smoothly to the line roller which can prevent lots of line troubles.

Being said, the 24 Stradic SW #4000 is the 23 Stradic 4000 with better water resistance.

So, if you are thinking to upgrade from 20 Stradic SW 4000 – yes it could be good choice.
But from 23 Stradic 4000 – only “yes” in case if you wish to be more extra heavy duty.
If not, probably not.

Specification and Release Date

As you may already know.. SHIMANO these days always announced “Pending” release dates for lots of products, but this time, they announced the release date as July 2024.
Hopefully it won’t be delayed as they did previously..

And bit sadly, the initial range is only from #4000 – #10000, PE5-300m capacity but expectedly, the larger model #14000XG should be coming soon in next year.
